Giclee Prints

For over thirty years I have seen my paintings go straight from the easel to galleries, or into private collections in New Zealand and overseas. Giclee printing is a way of reaching a wider audience and sharing my enjoyment of the subject. When I heard about this process, I was excited to think that an extended life had suddenly opened up to my paintings.

What is a Giclee Print?

Giclee ( Zhee clay ) is a French word meaning to spray . In other words, it is an inkjet print capable of printing large format pieces on watercolour paper, canvas and other media, using as many as twelve colours. Giclee printers spray millions of microscopic droplets of ink per second, resulting in resolutions higher than traditional lithography and achieving crisp contrast and rich, intense colours. The results can be amazing. First a digital scan is made from the original painting, photographic transparency or pdf file, and then transferred to a computer. I then supervise the correcting and finishing of the image. This process takes from hours to several days of work and prints are tested until everything is exactly as I want it. It is then archived on disc to assure its consistency. When finished and properly framed under glass, or, in the case of a stretched canvas covered with a protective coating, the final Giclee is archival, and will last from 75 to150 years if cared for properly, kept in a reasonable temperature and away from direct sunlight.
